Most exciting newcomer: Oklahoma Sooners

As spring workouts begin, we’re looking ahead to the fall by selecting one newcomer on each Big 12 roster most likely to create excitement when he gets to work. This is not necessarily the best recruit or transfer or the most impactful; rather, it's the guy who demands your attention when he’s on the field.

The series continues with Oklahoma.

Most exciting newcomer: RB Trey Sermon

The Sooners have reason to be excited about a lot of their incoming recruiting class. Cornerback Justin Broiles and linebackers Addison Gumbs and Levi Draper have the look of instant impact defenders. Running back Marcelias Sutton and wideout Marquise Brown, meanwhile, were two of the premier junior college talents in the country.

But Sermon gets the nod here. He's a player with the potential to be a workhorse back for the Sooners for years to come.

Oklahoma plucked Sermon out of Marietta, Georgia, where he had every SEC power, including Alabama, Florida and Georgia, after him, not to mention Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, Sermon already has the frame to handle a sizable workload. And with a unique blend of power and top-end speed, he could be a load for opposing Big 12 defenses for years to come.

With Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon moving on to the NFL, the Sooners have a void in the backfield alongside quarterback Baker Mayfield. Sermon could successfully fill that role, both next season and beyond.
