Cecil Cherry joining South Florida after short stay with Longhorns

Former Texas linebacker Cecil Cherry has elected to transfer to South Florida, his father confirmed to ESPN.com.

Cherry, a former three-star recruit from Frostproof, Florida, plans to enroll at USF on Wednesday and announced his decision on his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon.

According to his father, Winston Cherry, Cecil Cherry had focused on joining USF since leaving Texas last week. The only other programs that contacted him were junior colleges.

Cecil Cherry, a member of the Longhorns' coveted "Florida Five" freshman class, elected to transfer after just three practices with the team. He had previously committed to Tennessee before flipping to Texas in December.

Texas coach Charlie Strong said Tuesday that he's expecting a decision from the NCAA this week on another "Florida Five" signee, Devonaire Clarington. An ESPN 300 tight end, Clarington is still waiting to be cleared for enrollment.
