LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska third-string quarterback Luke McCaffrey, the brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey, entered Saturday's game for the Cornhuskers after Noah Vedral was injured in the second quarter of a 38-31 loss to Indiana.
Vedral drew the start Saturday in place of Adrian Martinez, who injured his left leg in the Oct. 5 game against Northwestern and did not play against Minnesota on Oct. 12. The Huskers were idle last week
Vedral was helped off the field after an 8-yard run with Nebraska trailing 16-14 and did not return until the final offensive drive of the game.
On his first full drive, McCaffrey threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kanawai Noa to put his team up 21-16 at the half, but the Hoosiers fought back to win.
McCaffrey completed 5 of 6 passes for 71 yards and ran for an additional 76 yards on 12 carries. Vedral returned with the Huskers down 7 and drove to the Indiana 34-yard line before the drive stalled, and Indiana was able to run out off the final three minutes.
McCaffrey, a true freshman, is the son of former Denver Broncos receiver Ed McCaffrey along with being the brother of the Carolina Panthers running back and Michigan backup QB Dylan McCaffrey.
The dual-threat QB had taken one snap for the Cornhuskers before Saturday, rushing for three yards against Northwestern after Vedral had to exit for one play because his helmet came off.
As a high school senior, he led Valor Christian to an undefeated season and a Colorado state title in his father's first year as coach.
