Liberty QB Kaidon Salter plans to enter transfer portal

Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter plans to enter the transfer portal, he announced Monday.

Salter developed into one of the most productive dual-threat quarterbacks in college football over his four seasons with the Flames and earned Conference USA MVP honors in 2023 while leading the program to a 13-1 season and Fiesta Bowl appearance. Salter has one remaining season of eligibility.

Salter has accounted for 6,438 total yards of offense and 66 touchdowns during his two seasons in coach Jamey Chadwell's spread option system. His 1,676 rushing yards since 2023 rank second most among all FBS quarterbacks behind Army's Bryson Daily.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2023 while leading the first perfect regular season in Liberty history. Salter threw a school-record 32 touchdown passes and the Flames won the Conference USA title in their first season in the league, finishing No. 25 in the final AP poll.

Liberty was expected to be a contender for a College Football Playoff bid in 2024 but went 8-3. Salter threw for 1,886 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions and rushed for 579 yards and seven more scores.

"As I move forward and enter the transfer portal, I will always cherish the memories and invaluable lessons learned here," Salter wrote in his announcement. "It is time for me to take the next step in my journey and do what I feel is best for my career."

The Cedar Hill, Texas, native had a brief stint at Tennessee in 2021 but was dismissed from the program before his freshman season and joined Liberty to play for now-Auburn coach Hugh Freeze. Salter briefly entered his name in the transfer portal at the end of the 2023 season but withdrew and stayed in the program.

Liberty left guard Jordan White and right tackle Xavior Gray are also expected to enter the transfer portal, a team source told ESPN. The two-year starters both earned all-conference recognition last season.
