Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill releases a statement that the school has withdrawn a contract offer to James Madison coach Mike Houston because Houston still plans to pursue other jobs. Houston likely will take the East Carolina job instead. Charlotte could turn to Matt Canada, Maryland's acting head coach for the past season, or other candidates for its vacancy.
ECU fires Montgomery after 9 wins in 3 seasons
Scottie Montgomery, who went 9-26 in his three seasons at East Carolina, was fired Thursday. Defensive coordinator David Blackwell will coach the Pirates' season finale.

East Carolina could be the top Group of 5 job in this coaching cycle. James Madison coach Mike Houston had been considered a top candidate for ECU but likely will be the next coach at Charlotte. Matt Canada, who served as Maryland interim coach this season, will be in the mix. Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson could be, too.
