For some strange reason, I feel as though I've written this story before. Actually, I have. For the second year in a row, in the same event, Thang Luu has proven once again that he is an extremely talented at Omaha high-low split.
Luu defended his title against a record field of 918 players, the most for any Omaha high-low split tournament. Luu needed to defeat 85 more players in 2009 than he did in 2008 to win his second bracelet and completed the feat after a six-hour final table on Sunday.
Impressed yet? Try this: Luu finished second in this event in 2007!
"It feels even better than the last one," Luu said of his most recent victory. "I think these kinds of $1,500 buy-in events are the best for me. There are a lot of new players in the [lower buy-in tournaments]."
The 34-year-old was joined at the final table by Freddy Deeb and now three-time WSOP runner-up Ed Smith. This was the first time since 2001 that a player has defended his title from the previous year, an accomplishment that has only happened nine times in WSOP history.
Other notable finishers include Eli Elezra (20th), Annie Duke (30th), Erick Lindgren (34th), Layne Flack (44th) and Todd Brunson (77th).
