It's a story we've heard before but honestly, it doesn't get old. Lisa Hamilton, a cash game specialist from Las Vegas, Nevada, wasn't planning on entering Event 17, the no-limit hold 'em Ladies World Championship. In fact, she was never planning on entering another tournament again after a quick exit in a previous WSOP event. However, when it was time to decide, she put up the $1,000 buy-in.
"I entered at the last minute," Hamilton said to the WSOP. "I kept telling my friend, 'I'm not playing!' I am not playing in this event! I decided to play and I don't even know how I made it this far. I'm shocked!"
A field of 1,060 ladies bought in, marking the fourth consecutive year that the field had over 1,000 players. Hamilton sailed into Day 3 in second place and continued to play strong as the field dwindled. The final table progressed quickly and when heads-up play began, Hamilton held about a 3:1 chip lead over her opponent, Lori Bender. Bender was the chip leader when the final table began, but couldn't overcome Hamilton's aggression. On the final hand, both players held a pair of eights, but Hamilton's kicker was the difference (a queen versus a nine).
Although a final table wasn't in the cards for Susie Issacs, she did make history in this event. By making the money and finishing in 84th place, Issacs has now cashed in this event nine times, the most in WSOP history.
Other notable finishers include Karina Jett (21st), Maria Ho (97th), and Erica Schoenberg (117th).
