ISL: Goa go top of the table
FC Goa beat Kerala Blasters 1-0 at the Fatorda to go top of the table - they now lead the Blasters by two points and have two games in hand too. A late first half Rowllin Borges strike (45'+1') was the difference as the compact Goa side absorbed the controlled chaos of the Blasters rather well. Adrian Luna, looking unwell, couldn't influence proceedings to his usual degree but still forced Sandesh Jhingan and co. into a few last ditch defensive clearances towards the end. It was an entertaining affair, belying the scoreline, but one in which Goa rarely looked like ceding the advantage.
Tomorrow's ISL match will see East Bengal take on NorthEast United.
PKL: Tamil Thalaivas start with a big win, Gujarat win back-to-back
Ajinkya Pawar led the scoring for the Thalaivas with a big 21 point haul (14 raid, 2 tackle, 5 bonus) -- outscoring the dangerous Naveen Kumar (14) as they beat Dabang Delhi 42-31.
Gujarat Giants meanwhile had their second win in two days after edging out Bengaluru Bulls 34-31. Sonu Jaglan top scored with 12 points (9 raid, 1 tackle, 2 bonus).
Runners-up medals for Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto
Japan's Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanashi outlasted India's Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto as they won the Syed Modi intnl women's doubles title in some style 21-14, 17-21, 21-15
The Indian pair had started the match well, racing into a 11-8 lead in the first game only for Iwanaga and Nakanashi to come back strong. They pulled the score back to 11-11 before powering away to a comfortable 21-14 win in the game. The second game saw the experienced Ponnappa take the game by its collar as she and the youthful attack of Crasto held the lead steady for most of the match, keeping a late surge from their opponents at bay before taking the game 21-17. The third game started in a worrying manner for the Indian pair, Nakanashi and Iwanaga racing to a 9-1 lead before Ponnappa and Crasto pulled it back, a bit, to 10-7... but towards the end the Japanese pair proved too strong, powering home to a 21-15 win in the third .

I-League time
Shillong Lajong equalised in the 96th minute after Rajasthan United had taken a ninth minute lead to pull out a 1-1 draw out of nothing. This sees Lajong climb to fourth in the table while Rajasthan remain rooted in 12th (second-bottom). Meanwhile, the top-of-the-table clash between Mohammedan Sporting and Sreenidi Deccan saw Mohemmadan win 2-1 to extend their lead at the top to three.
Badminton update
The 2023 Syed Modi intl men's champion is... Chinese Taipei's Yu Jen Chi, who beat Japan's Kento Nishimoto in a long, tough three-gamer 20-22, 21-12, 21-17. Up next is the women's singles between favourite Nozomi Okuhara and Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt, and after that India's Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto will be in women's doubles finals action.
Earlier in the day, Ferdinasyah and Widjaja of Indonesia won the mixed doubles title.
Big admin news from athletics
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has decided to stop running national camps for elite athletes after the Paris Olympics. This will now help formalise a structure where private entities (like JSW with IIS and Reliance Sports) and public sector entities (like the Army and Sports Authority of India centres of excellence) can take care of the best track and field athletes in the country. The aim, said AFI president Adille Sumariwala, is to make the most of the facilities that are being built, and the foreign/private coaches being hired by these different entities. "The athletes will have more access, they can stay at their homes and not at camps for training," he said.
The AFI's move would mean that top athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar and Avinash Sable will not train under the aegis of the AFI after 2024 Paris, though it will continue to monitor them. Currently, the AFI conducts centralised national training camps of around 130-150 elite athletes under the supervision of 50-60 support staff, mainly at NIS Patiala, Bengaluru SAI Centre and LNCPE in Thiruvananthapuram.
A big game in ISL tonight
Ah, nothing like a top-of-the-table clash to wake us up on a lazy Sunday evening. It's Kerala Blasters in Goa to take on FC Goa, at 8 PM, and it's a big one. They have been the early pacesetters of the ISL* and they've been doing it in contrasting fashion.
The Blasters have scored the most goals in the division, 13 (Goa have 10) while Goa have conceded the least, 3 (the Blasters have conceded 9)... and that base stat gives you a decent indication of how the respective managers like their teams to play ball.
Ivan Vukomanovic is all-energy, high-pressing, gap-leaving chaos while Manolo Marquez likes to play at his own calm tempo, keep ball, maintain compactness (while still scoring lots). This clash of styles will make the goings on tonight at the Fatorda very interesting to follow - just as it did when Vukomanovic's Blasters and Marquez's Hyderabad squared off in the ISL final at the same venue in March 2022.
