Alessandro Florenzi signs new five-year deal, Monchi hails 'one of the happiest days'

Alessandro Florenzi has said he was delighted to sign a new five-year Roma contract, with sporting director Monchi hailing his decision.

Florenzi, tipped to become Roma captain after coming through the youth ranks, ended speculation he may leave by committing to his home town club until 2022.

"Today is definitely a happy day for me," Florenzi said at a news conference. "I would like to thank all the fans that are happy like I am with this renewal today. I would like to hug all of them.

"I am very proud, very pleased to be able to continue to wear this shirt and represent this city."

Monchi, who has brought in 13 new players this summer, hailed Florenzi's decision.

"This is one of the happiest days in my 15 months at Roma so far, not just as a sporting director but as a person and a fan of Roma," he said. "One of Roma's sons has renewed his contract and will stay here at least five years.

"I say it is happy moment because I don't know how long I will be at Roma, but I hope to one day be a Romanista like he is. This was not a short negotiation, but I think from the first moment we all were confident that it would end well because Alessandro wanted to stay here."

Florenzi, 27, has made 224 appearances for the Giallorossi, although he was criticised by some Roma fans for his performances last season after returning from a serious knee injury.

He faced a backlash from fans when he appeared to be delaying over a new deal, but said he had turned down more lucrative offers from elsewhere in order to stay in Rome.

"I know there are also fans that are perhaps a less certain, perhaps because of the performances I put in last season, and I will try to win them around," he said. "I know I am not [Francesco] Totti or [Daniele] De Rossi, but I knew that I wanted to stay at Roma, even turning down more money.

"I might not please everybody, but I'm really happy today. I've heard and read things that hurt me, but at a certain stage, I just said to myself: 'Alessa, you can't please everybody,'" he said.

"I've always given everything for this shirt and I'll continue to do so."
