Messi hits the 300 mark, Lewandowski third to 250, AC Milan's record 14 -- best stats from mid-week

Ah, good ol' December mid-week league action.

Liverpool waited till the last minute to beat Tottenham Hotspur. West Bromwich Albion clung on for a draw at Manchester City, but that wasn't enough for poor Slaven Bilic. Leeds United went full-Bielsa against Newcastle United. Arsenal survived against Southampton. Bayern Munich came from behind to win. Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen dismantled FC Cologne. La Liga leaders Real Sociedad were beaten by Barcelona, their neighbours Athletic Bilbao beaten by Real Madrid. The Inzaghi brothers settled for a draw, as did Juventus-Atalanta and Genoa-AC Milan. Oh, and Inter Milan edged past 10-man Napoli.

Quite a lot of action then, and here are the best numbers from it all --

Premier League

3

Roberto Firmino's is only the third 90th-minute winning goal anyone had scored against Jose Mourinho in the PL -- after Mark Viduka for Middlesbrough in August 2006 and Oussama Assaidi in December 2013 for Stoke City.

5

Leeds United beat Newcastle United 5-2 at home. This is the first time they have scored 5+ goals in a single PL game at Elland Road since May 2001, when they beat Bradford City 6-1.

7

Arsenal have been shown seven red cards in Mikel Arteta's short reign. That is four more than any other PL side since Arteta's first game on 26 Dec 2019.

8

Sam Allardyce has replaced Slaven Bilic at West Brom. Big Sam has taken charge of more different clubs in the PL than any other manager, with the Baggies being his eighth different managerial role in the competition.

20

Manchester City's 20 points are the club's fewest after 12 games in the PL since 2009-10 (also 20).

25

Three of the five instances of a team having 25+ shots in a PL game this season have been Leeds United (vs. Aston Villa, Arsenal and Newcastle on Wednesday). Like we said before, full Bielsa.

35

Pablo Hernández is the oldest player (35y 249d) to assist twice in a PL game for Leeds since Gordon Strachan in November 1993 vs Swindon, who was 36 years old at the time.

36

Liverpool's win on Wednesday was their 36th via game-winning goal in the 90th minute or later. That is the most in PL history, by far. The next closest are Arsenal with 25 and Manchester United with 24.

38

Only Robin van Persie (46) and Olivier Giroud (40) have scored more Premier League goals at the Emirates than Theo Walcott (38).

66

Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 66 home PL games (55 Wins, 11 draws). This is the second-longest home unbeaten streak in English top-flight history, after Chelsea's 86 from 2004-08.

80%

You've heard of one-man teams, but what about two-man ones? 80% of Spurs' PL goals (20/25) this season have been scored by either Son Heung-min (11) or Harry Kane (9).

82

Non-British players (excl. own-goals) have scored each of Wolves' last 82 goals in the PL. The only team that has had a longer such run? Arsenal, with 171 between October 2005-February 2008.

196

Wednseday was the first 0-0 league game at Craven Cottage since August 2011. There had been atleast one goal in the last 196-straight PL/Championship games that Fulham had played at home.

648

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has ended a run of 648 minutes without a PL goal at the Emirates.

La Liga

10

Celta Vigo's Iago Aspas has been directly involved in more La Liga goals than any other player this season (7 goals and 3 assists).

12

Karim Benzema has scored 12 go-ahead goals over the last two La Liga seasons, the most in that span.

19

Only Robert Lewandowski (28) has scored more headed goals than Benzema (19) since the start of 2018/19 in all competitions among players in the top-five European leagues

Bundesliga

5

Bayern Munich have tied Manchester United for the most wins (5) from trailing positions in all competitions for teams from Europe's top-five leagues this season.

251

Robert Lewandowski is only the third person to score more than 250 Bundesliga goals in the competitions history, after Klaus Fischer (268 in 535 games) and Gerd Muller (365 in just 427 games). Lewandowski now has 251 in 332.

Serie A

6

Juventus have drawn at least six of their first 12 league games of the season for the first time since 1984/85. That season, they finished sixth.

14

AC Milan have scored at least 2 goals in 14 Serie A games in a row. This is a record for the Italian top-flight, upstaging Torino's 13 such games in 1948.

32/50

Antonio Conte is the third manager in Inter Milan's history to win at least 32 of his first 50 Serie A games with them, after Aldo Olivieri (34) and Jose Mourinho (34).

Messi-Ronaldo watch

One of those rarities - neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo got on the score sheet this mid-week match day, with Ronaldo compounding his misery with a penalty miss.

3

That miss was Ronaldo's third penalty miss in Serie A (of 24 taken).

300

Messi has now won 300 games for Barcelona at the Camp Nou in all competitions -- 211 in La Liga, 53 in the Champions League, 30 in the Copa del Rey and 6 in the Supercopa.
