UCL stats: No Ronaldo, Messi in quarters for the first time since 2004-05; Haaland shines

No Lionel Messi, no Cristiano Ronaldo -- for the first time in 16 years neither of the two players who have come to define modern European football will play in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. That stat headlines a mid-week that saw Barcelona lose to PSG, Juventus to FC Porto (in extra time, on away goals), last year's Europa League winners Sevilla FC to Borussia Dortmund and last year's UCL semifinalists RB Leipzig to Liverpool.

By The Numbers has the best stats from all the action:

1

Juventus have been eliminated in the round of 16 two seasons in a row for the first time in their European Cup/Champions League history.

4

Kylian Mbappe has scored four goals against Barcelona in this season's UCL -- that's the most a player has ever scored against Barca in a single season in the competition.

12/13

In all European competitions under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool have now progressed from 12 of their 13 two-legged knockout ties (including qualifiers), only failing in last season's round of 16 against Atletico Madrid.

13

Barcelona have failed to reach the UCL quarter-finals for the first time since 2006-07. This snaps their run of 13 consecutive quarterfinal appearances, the longest in the competition's history.

16

Since Alisson Becker made his UCL debut in September 2017, the Brazilian has kept more clean sheets (16) in the competition than any other goalkeeper.

19

Barcelona scored just the one goal on the night, but it was a cracker. It was Messi's 19th goal from outside the box in the UCL - since his debut in the competition back in December 2004, only Ronaldo has scored more from range in the competition (20).

22, 80

Aged 22 years and 80 days, Mbappe has become the youngest player in UCL history to reach 25 goals in the competition. Whose record did he beat? Messi (22y 286d). Talk about mantles being taken over.

2004-05

Just to reiterate. This is the first season since 2004-05 that both Ronaldo and Messi wouldn't have reached the UCL quarterfinals. The times are a-changin'.

Erling Haaland watch

This section is usually reserved for Ronaldo and Messi, but we're making an exception because Erling Braut Haaland is a phenom-in-the-making.

2

Haaland is the first player in UCL history to score 10+ goals in each of his first two seasons in the competition. In fact, Haaland joins Messi as the only players in UCL history with multiple double-digit outputs in a single campaign before turning 24 years old. Of course, Haaland is only 20 (more on that later).

4

Haaland is the first player in UCL history to score 2+ goals in four straight games. He has seven multi-goal games in the UCL, five more than any other player before turning 21 in the tournament's history.

6

Haaland is the youngest ever player to score in six consecutive UCL appearances.

20

Haaland is the youngest player (20y 231d) to reach 20 career UCL goals. Those goals have come in 14 UCL appearances; the quickest a player has ever reached 20 goals in the competition, and in 10 fewer appearances than the previous record holder (Harry Kane, 24).

No one aged below 21 has scored more

The 20 also means he has passed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for most UCL goals scored by a Norwegian.
