The proposed ASEAN Super League, proposed to begin in September, could face further delays, according to the former president of the Football Association of Singapore, Zainudin Nordin.
Zainudin, who is part of the ASL task force, told Today that the concept is a "work in progress" and there is "no commitment" for it to begin within the next year.
Zainudin made his comments in Singapore on Wednesday after an ASEAN Football Federation Special Council meeting, attended by members of the AFF Council. FAS general secretary Winston Lee was also present at the get together at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
It is believed that the Super League will feature 10 teams from AFF member nations, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. Australia is an AFF member nation, but is not expected to be involved.
The Super League will be similar in concept to the Indian Super League, featuring playoffs and franchises. The ISL, which began in 2014, has helped the growth of football across India, featuring star imports like Alessandro Del Piero, Robert Pires and Diego Forlan.
According to Today, Zainudin no longer heads the ASL taskforce, although he is still involved in the planning stages and could become the league's first chief executive officer.
