Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez has extended his contract with the club until 2021.

Martinez has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season for the Basque outfit, who are 11th in the Primera Division.

The 24-year-old, whose contract was due to expire in 2017, has picked up one cap for Spain and the club confirmed his renewal on their official website.

A statement read: "The defender has extended his contract by four years. Accompanied by president Jokin Aperribay and sporting director Loren, he signed the new agreement this morning at the club's offices in Anoeta."

Aperribay said: "It is wonderful news for Real Sociedad that one of the pillars for the present and future of the team will continue with us. [Inigo] carries Real Sociedad in his heart and is a player who represents our philosophy and the team's ambitions."

Martinez said he was "very happy to be able to continue for many more years."

He added: "I am very proud to continue playing for this club. I wanted to extend my contract and, finally, the day has arrived. Real Sociedad have made a huge effort for this to happen and I only hope I can repay them out on the pitch."
