Another goal to add to Tim Cahill's epic highlight reel

Has there ever been a footballer who rises -- often literally -- to the occasion like Tim Cahill? Certainly, there's been no better produced by Australia.

The 36-year-old made his long-awaited A-League debut on Saturday night in Melbourne City's 4-1 thrashing of crosstown rivals Melbourne Victory, and made an instant impact.

Just prior to the half-hour mark, the Socceroos' greatest-ever goal-scorer collected a loose ball some 40-metres out from goal and dispatched an unstoppable drive past hapless Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas.

Remarkable. But not at all surprising given Cahill's ability to find the net when his team needs him the most.

But where does Saturday's wonder-strike rank in Cahill's catalogue of epic moments? Here's a look at Cahill's top five goals in his career:

5. New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo, MLS 2013

Blink and you'll miss it.

In a goal reminiscent of the one at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, Cahill stunned the Houston Dynamo after collecting a bobbling ball from way outside the penalty area and launching a fearsome drive into the top-right corner.

The strike, scored just seven seconds into the match, held the MLS record for fastest-ever goal until Mike Grella -- also from the Red Bulls -- bettered the mark in 2015.

4. Australia vs. China, Asian Cup 2015

Headed-goals may be Cahill's bread and butter, but the Melbourne City man has scored his fair share of overhead kicks too.

While this strike against Chelsea may have be more spectacular, it's the one against China in the 2015 Asian Cup that will be the standout for Socceroos fans.

The tournament hosts had lost their final group stage match against South Korea, and were being held at bay by a valiant China side in the quarterfinal.

Cahill, however, stepped up to deliver two crucial strikes to send his nation on its way to a first-ever major men's national trophy.

3. Melbourne City vs. Melbourne Victory, A-League 2016

Many of his contemporaries from Australia's "Golden Generation" have returned to the A-League without much success. Cahill, however, seems to be cut from a different cloth.

With Russia 2018 firmly in his sights, Cahill is making all the right moves to make sure he gets a ticket to his fourth World Cup.

Strikes like these prove that he certainly has the class to do it.

2. Australia vs. Netherlands, World Cup 2014

ESPN's Rob Brooks labelled it "the greatest goal ever scored by an Aussie in an international fixture," and it's hard to argue with him.

The spectacular volley -- scored with his non-dominant foot, if you don't mind -- not only earned Cahill a nomination for the 2014 Puskas Award but, perhaps more crucially, sparked a belief in Ange Postecoglou's Socceroos squad that they could go toe-to-toe with some of the world's best.

That swagger still echoes through the Australian national team to this very day.

1. Australia vs. Japan, World Cup 2006

There's no doubt the 2014 goal against the Netherlands was a more difficult, technically perfect strike. But in terms of significance, it's hard to think of one more vital than Cahill's second against Japan in 2006.

John Aloisi is fondly remembered for his penalty that ended Australia's 32-year absence from the World Cup, but it all would have been for naught had Cahill not changed the game as a substitute in the group stage opener against Japan.

Down one-nil and on the ropes in Kaiserslautern with five minutes to go, the Socceroos' historic 2006 campaign could have been over before it had even begun. Cahill, however, had other ideas and first got the Aussies back into the game by poking a loose ball home from six yards.

Then, in the 89th minute, the then-Everton man collected the ball just outside the area and unleashed a perfectly-placed curler into the far post.

"Cometh the hour, cometh the man!" exclaimed the commentator at the time, in a sentiment that would be repeated about Cahill again and again over the next decade.
