Ngezi compound CAPS woes, Dynamos win

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League pacesetters Ngezi Platinum Stars stretched their lead at the top to three points following a comeback 2-1 win over CAPS United at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Ngezi had not beaten CAPS in competitive football since being promoted to the topflight in 2016, and it looked as though that curse would continue after John Zhuwawo handed the hosts the lead with a deflected half-volley just before the half-hour mark.

It was only the third goal Ngezi have conceded in 11 matches, and they pulled level barely 10 minutes later, with star turn Terrence Dzvukamanja planting an unstoppable left footer into the roof of goal from just inside the box.

The marauding visitors then seized the lead moments before the breather after back in form attacker James Ngulube arrived first to beat CAPS goal-minder Chris Mverechena from a rebound.

CAPS never really looked like coming back into the match after the break and coach Lloyd Chitembwe looked distraught at the end, with his team's second defeat in three matches leaving them 13 points adrift of the log leaders.

Ngezi on the other hand had more to celebrate as their ninth win in 11 matches came just 24 hours after title rivals FC Platinum were held to a goalless draw by 10-men Triangle at Mandava.

Triangle had Arnold Chivheya send off for a second-bookable offence on 67 minutes, but Platinum just could not take full advantage of their numerical superiority.

There were celebrations at Dynamos after Quality Kangadze's first-half effort fired them to a 1-0 win at Bulawayo Chiefs.

It is a third win in four matches for the Harare giants, whose disastrous start to the season cost coach Lloyd Mutasa his job last week.

Mutasa's former assistant Biggie Zuze was in charge on Sunday, and the former Dynamos midfielder will hope his players have recovered their self-belief ahead of a tough fixture at home to champions FC Platinum next week.

Dynamos, who spend several weeks in the relegation zone, have since climbed into eighth.

In other matchday 11 encounters, Bulawayo and Highlanders were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Yadah, just a week after they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to ZPC Kariba.

Highlanders have now managed just one win in their last four matches to fall eight points behind Ngezi.

Chicken Inn climbed two places up into fourth despite a goalless draw at Chapungu. The result, a fourth draw in six matches for the 2015 champions, leaves them nine points shy of the summit.

Protasho Kabwe was on the score-sheet as Harare City piped Nichrut 1-0 for a third consecutive win. Mark Harrison's men have since risen into sixth-place but face huge test in their next match away to Chicken Inn.
