TOP STORY: Man United look to Barca's Umtiti
Manchester United's search for a central defender has seen them target Leicester City's Harry Maguire for much of the summer, but French outlet le10sport is suggesting they could now focus their attentions on Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti as the window is potentially closing on a move for the England international.
United are prepared to spend up to £46 million on the France international -- considerably less than Leicester's asking price for Maguire but still around £10m short of Barca's asking price.
United and Leicester have been unable to agree on a fee for Maguire, who himself is seemingly growing as frustrated as the rest of us with the continuing saga, and which is why United might explore a plan B.
Umtiti, 25, played just 14 times in La Liga last season after missing much of the season with a knee injury. However, he has made 97 appearances in total and has been a cornerstone of their domestic success when healthy.

23.11 BST: With Nicolas Pepe set to sign for Arsenal, Napoli are moving on to a new target.
The Daily Mail claims that Carlo Ancelotti's club are ready to offer £60 million to Crystal Palace for tricky Eagles winger Wilfried Zaha. Zaha, 26, has made it clear he wants to leave Selhurst Park this summer, although his dream move was to the Emirates.
Crystal Palace have reportedly already turned down a £40m bid from Arsenal and a £55m bid from Everton, but will £60m be enough to finally prise the Ivory Coast international away from Selhurst Park?
22.26 BST: Manchester United are set to sign French prodigy Hannibal Mejbri, one of the country's biggest talents, sources have told ESPNFC.
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder is currently playing at Monaco but a disagreement between him and the club meant that he has not played for their youth team for months. The club of the Principality initially didn't want their diamond to leave but have decided to accept United's offer.
The Old Trafford outfit are expected to pay €10 million (5 million transfer fee and 5 million in bonuses) for the France Under-16 international who was wanted by all the top European clubs when he chose to leave his grass root club Boulogne Billancourt, in the west suburbs of Paris, for Monaco a year ago.
Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as Juventus, were also keen on signing him but United have won the race. Mejbri will fly to Manchester on Thursday to pass his medical. He went through the INF Clairefontaine pre-academy like Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry before him.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper played five seasons in Mexico after arriving first at Santos Laguna from Lanus in 2014. The four-capped Argentine international won both a league title and a cup title during his time with America. America are expected to target El Tri No. 1 Guillermo Ochoa as Marchesin's replacement.
Ochoa made over 200 appearances for Club America from 2004-2011 before making his move to Europe, where he had stints in France, Spain and Belgium.
21.16 BST: The Chicago Fire are talking with former Atletico Madrid defender Juanfran, sources have told ESPN.
The MLS side is offering a two-year contract for a 34-year-old who was part of the Atleti team that won La Liga in 2014, the sources said.
But the Fire have competition from Brazilian giant Sao Paulo, who is also offering a two-year deal, and whose coach Rai has also been attempting to persuade Juanfran to move to South America.
Nashville SC and Corinthians had also expressed interest in the former Spain international, whose future is set to be decided in the coming days.
20.42 BST: With Joelinton in tow, Newcastle are looking to move striker Dwight Gayle.
Stoke are one club who have enquired about the 24-goal striker, who starred last season on loan at West Brom. The Potters are unlikely to be able to afford Gayle, who Newcastle value at upwards of £15 million.
When asked about Gayle earlier, Stoke manager Nathan Jones had the following to say: "He is someone we like because he is a very talented individual and when he plays at this level he usually scores goals.
"But anything else would be wrong of me to mention."
20:11 BST: Nicolas Pepe will complete his £72 million move to Arsenal "within the net 24 hours," according to Lille president Gerard Lopez.
Speaking with RMC Sport on the links to Arsenal, the Lille boss said "I think it should be done in the next 24 hours.
"It is €80m (£72m) fixed. "If we pushed this out a little longer, we could've had five or six offers."
Pepe, 24, scored 22 goals and added 11 assists last season as Lille surprisingly finished second in Ligue 1.
19.40 BST: Birmingham and Newcastle are two clubs reportedly interested in Under-19 Republic of Ireland star Jonathan Afolabi.
The 19-year-old is a free agent after being released by Southampton at the end of last season, but recently did himself a huge favour by being named to the all-tournament team at Under-19 European Championships in Armenia.
Pundit Arena cites "sources close to the player" in saying that Afolabi has options both in the Premier League and Championship, with Crystal Palace said to be the favourites.
19.07 BST: Arsenal youngster Emile Smith Rowe could be headed back to Germany.
The Independent writes that Bundesliga side Wolfsburg are hoping to sign the 19-year-old attacking midfielder. Smith Rowe spent the second half of last season on loan in Germany but only played three times before a groin injury sidelined him.
Arsenal are keen for the Under-19 England international to get more first-team minutes, which likely would be hard to come by at the Emirates this season.
c18.31 BST: Brentford have signed Ecuadorian winger Joel Valencia from first-time Polish champions Piast Gliwice.
The 24-year-old contributed six goals and six assists in Paist Gilwice's title-winning campaign and joins the Bees on a four-year contract.

Delighted to join @AtletiFemenino and continue my journey in @laliga 🇪🇸
— Toni Duggan (@toniduggan) July 31, 2019
Excited about the challenge ahead & can't wait to meet up with the team 😃 #AúpaAtleti pic.twitter.com/qwXXRk7Eiq
Duggan, 28, has signed a two-year deal with the Spanish champions following a two-year stint with the Catalans.
"This is an amazing opportunity to play for one of the greatest clubs in Europe," Duggan said. "I had several different offers -- from all around the world -- but at this stage in my career, I wanted to join a side that is consistently challenging for honours and Atletico's record is incredible. "I have met both the captain and manager -- this is the next level for me, in every sense. They have great players and I want to help them to retain the league and to go further in the Champions League."
Duggan, who has also played for Everton and Manchester City, scored 29 goals in 72 games for Barca and helped them reach the Champions League final last season, where they lost to Lyon.
She has earned 71 caps for England and was part of the squad which reached the World Cup semifinals this summer. Atletico have won Spain's top flight each of the last four years, but have lost two players -- Jenni Hermoso and Andrea Falcon -- to Barca during the current transfer window.
17.22 BST: A new club has reportedly entered the fray for prized Liverpool attacker Harry Wilson.
The Sun claims that Bournemouth are readying a £25 million offer for the 22-year-old Wales international. Wilson has played just once in four seasons for the European champions but last season bagged 17 goals on loan with English Championship side Derby County,
With three big-money attackers in Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino entrenched at Anfield, Wilson's future with the club has been a major topic of discussion this summer. Bournemouth and Liverpool are no strangers to do business with one another either, as Jordon Ibe and Dominic Solanke have both moved from Anfield to the South Coast in recent years.
16.40 BST: Liverpool youngster Ki-Jana Hoever has signed a new long-term deal, the club has announced.
The Netherlands Under-17 international made his debut for the Reds at 16-year-old in FA Cup third round last season.

14.31 BST: La Repubblica reports that Inter Milan are turning to another target after growing frustrated with Manchester United over Romelu Lukaku.

13.46 BST: 2014 World Cup winner Andre Schurrle is set to leave Borussia Dortmund for Spartak Moscow, a source has told ESPN FC.
Russian outlet Championat first reported that the 28-year-old will join the Russian club on an initial one-year loan with a view to an €8m permanent transfer.
Schurrle became Dortmund's record transfer when he joined from Wolfsburg for €30m in 2016, but last summer his time at the Westfalenstadion was cut short after two disappointing seasons. The former Chelsea winger joined Fulham on a two-year loan, but returned to Germany after the club's relegation from Premier League.
However, despite having a contract, Schurrle never returned to Dortmund. Instead he kept fit in Berlin and is now headed to Moscow to continue his career.

14.50 BST: Kevin-Prince Boateng is now a Fiorentina player.
12.38 BST: RB Leipzig want attacker Timo Werner to decide on his future quickly.
The Germany international has been linked to Liverpool and Bayern, having entered the final 12 months of his contract, and the would rather cash in on the 23-year-old than lose him on a free transfer.
"In life, you have to make decisions. And Timo will certainly make one soon. We are convinced of it," Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff told Sport Bild. "We still wish for a contract extension.
"We've been talking for nearly a year now. And if there is clarity, we can focus on what happens on the pitch ... it's like that and Timo Werner would remain an important part of RB Leipzig."
However, Mintzlaff also admitted Leipzig are not in control of the situation. "We can only make [contract] offers," he said. "And if Timo does not want to prolong, we'd like to cash in on him. And there are many interested clubs. Also international top clubs have made enquiries."
12.14 BST: Barcelona had classified the sale of Philippe Coutinho as a priority this summer but sources at the Catalan club have told ESPN FC there's "concern" about the fact they have still not received a single offer for the Brazilian.
With just eight days to go until the transfer window closes in England, Barca are now worried that there will be no bids from Premier League clubs for Coutinho.

Sources have told ESPN Argentina's Diego Monroig that the Major League Soccer side submitted an offer for the forward over the weekend but Boca believed it to be "insufficient."
11.21 BST: The Evening Standard reports that Danny Drinkwater looks set to stay at Chelsea this season.
Drinkwater's £35m move from Leicester in 2017 has to go down as one of the worst ever as he's barely played for the Blues -- making just one sub appearance last season in the Community Shield.
New Chelsea manager Frank Lampard reportedly told the midfielder he wasn't needed next year but now it seems as if he might stay to provide backup for Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N'Golo Kante,
11.10 BST: Manchester City defender Tosin Adarabioyo has joined Blackburn on a season-long loan.

10.28 BST: Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac has apologised to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for publicly discussing the possible transfer of Leroy Sane in the German media earlier this week.
"I might have been a bit too outspoken. I've already contacted Pep," Kovac told German broadcaster ZDF following the 6-1 Audi Cup win over Fenerbahce. "I have explained the situation to him. I have apologised because, of course, I know that [Sane] is a City player. I'd like to think that's it. Pep took my point and the world will keep on turning. I not only want to apologise to Pep, but also to the club."
However, speaking at his postmatch news conference, Kovac also insisted that everything he said was true.
"I always tell the truth," he said, about Bayern's interest in Sane. "What I said, stands. It's verified."
10.13 BST: Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny wants out and Rennes are ready to come back in for the defender, says Sky Sports.

Vitolo, 29, has had an injury-hit time since joining Atletico from Sevilla for €36m two summers ago and, in early July, sources told ESPN FC that he would move on if an offer was received which suited both player and club.
The Spain international has since been in excellent form in preseason, scoring in Atletico's 7-3 International Champions Cup victory over Real Madrid last weekend. And he told a news conference that he remained unsure over his future but was "excited" to remain a Rojiblanco player.
"I've not spoken with [Simeone], at the moment neither the club nor the boss have told me anything," he said. "I'm still here, and am not looking at going anywhere. I am motivated to be here, excited to be here, and want to show the boss I can be here. I have a lot more football to give Atletico."
08.29 BST: Pochettino has admitted he does not know if reported Real Madrid target Christian Eriksen will be sold or sign a new contract this summer.
Eriksen spoke at the beginning of the transfer window about "trying something new," and AS said this week that a deal with Madrid had stalled as Bernabeu coach Zinedine Zidane preferred to move for Manchester United's Paul Pogba.
"I just coach him, I try and obtain the best for him," Pochettino said at the postmatch news conference after Tottenham beat Madrid 1-0 in the Audi Cup on Tuesday. "Whether we sell a player, or renew his contract, is in the club's hands."
08.00 BST: Sometimes we like to start our mornings angry. Just like Mauricio Pochettino.
The Tottenham boss has distanced himself from the club's lack of transfer activity, suggesting that his title may need to be changed from manager to head coach.
So far this summer, Tottenham have broken their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, while they have also signed young winger Jack Clarke from Leeds United, where he will return on loan for the coming season. Having gone the two previous transfer windows without a single signing, a frustrated Pochettino believes he should not be the one held responsible for the lack of arrivals at White Hart Lane.
PAPER TALK (by Nick Judd)
Barca to send Malcom to Zenit
Barcelona are finalising a deal to send Brazilian forward Malcom to Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg for €40 million that could include €5-10m in add-ons, sources have told ESPN FC.
- Sources: Barca eye Betis' Junior Firpo
- Sources: Man United's Darmian on Barca radar
Malcom, who joined from Bordeaux last summer on a €40m deal, is out of the picture at Camp Nou, and the Catalan giants are keen to recoup some of the money they've spent in the current transfer window.
Everton had also been keen on bringing the man from Sao Paulo to the Premier League but sources said Malcom has already agreed on the move to the Russian league champions.
The move would be the latest drama in the 22-year-old's club career. Bordeaux and Roma had publically annouced Malcom's transfer to the Italian side last summer before Barcelona made their late swoop.
Seagulls to break record for reliant Robin
Brighton look set to smash their club transfer record with the signing of Bristol City centre-back Adam Webster, reports the Independent.
The Seagulls look set to offer £20m up front and £5m in add-ons for a deal the Indy claim is close to completion. The £25m package would eclipse the Championship record of £24m, which is what Leicester City paid Norwich City for James Maddison this time last year.
