Las Palmas defender offers shelter from wildfires

Las Palmas defender Deivid Rodriguez has offered shelter to people that have been affected by the wildfires ripping through Gran Canaria.

Deivid's family has a farm on the island and is willing to take both people and their animals that have been forced away from their homes.

More than 8,000 people have been evacuated because of the fires that started on Saturday near the town of Tejera and are advancing, out of control, on two fronts in a mountainous area of the island.

Deivid, a Las Palmas native, posted a Twitter message on Monday night: "Good evening, my family and I offer our country farm to take in animals and people. We are at the service of the people. Any doubt contact the Red Cross in Las Palmas. Strength and much encouragement to everyone."

High temperatures, strong winds and low humidity have hurt efforts to stop the fire from spreading.

The affected area has increased to 12000 hectares with the flames reaching the island's Tamadaba natural park.

Other Spanish personalities have sent messages of support to those affected.

Former Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas posted on Twitter a photograph of the mountainous area of the island before the fires with the message: "A lot of strength Gran Canaria, we are with you, we all want to see this image."
