Tiger Woods still the target for Scottish Open organisers

Tiger Woods has turned down the opportunity to appear at the Scottish Open, but could make his bow in the tournament as early as next year, organisers have claimed.

Tournament director Peter Adams revealed that a host of last year's Ryder Cup stars from Gleneagles - eight victorious Europeans and four defeated Americans - will take part in this year's Scottish Open, which gets underway at Gullane Golf Club next month.

But he admitted that Tiger, who is looking to squeeze more golf into his schedule after a dramatic collapse in form, would not be among the field for the Open Championship warm-up.

"We have had discussions," Adams said. "In fact, I was sitting next to Mark Steinberg [Tiger's agent] at the European Tour dinner and we spoke about it.

"He did tell me that Tiger was planning to play much more golf over the summer but that, unfortunately, the Scottish Open is not in his plans. But we are talking to them all the time and maybe, in one year, that will change.

"Of all the great fields we've had for the Scottish Open, the 2015 must be one of the best - if not the best - we've ever had, in terms of great quality golfers playing in this tournament.'

Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell's participation was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Europeans joining fellow Ryder Cup-winners Rory McIlroy, Thomas Bjorn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Stephen Gallacher, and defending champion Justin Rose.

The American contingent is represented by Phil Mickelson - the 2013 Scottish Open champion - Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and Jimmy Walker.

Adam, meanwhile, played down American magnate Donald Trump's claims that the Scottish Open will be permanently based at his Aberdeenshire golf course at Menie from 2017.

"Trump International is one of a number of clubs with which the Tour has been in conversation," he said.
