The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander Dylan Covey from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
He has been added to the club player pool. Left-hander Bobby Poyner was removed from the pool but remains in the organization.
Covey, 28, has made 63 appearances with 45 starts in a three-year career with the Chicago White Sox. He is 6-29 with a 6.54 ERA.
Also Tuesday, the Rays placed left-handed reliever Colin Poche on the 45-day injured list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He will miss the season and the team said Tommy John surgery has been recommended.
Catcher Kevan Smith was added to the 40-man roster to replace Poche, who went 5-5 with a 4.70 ERA in 51 appearances last season.
