BJ Penn will return to UFC for fight vs. Yair Rodriguez on Jan. 15

The UFC has booked another comeback fight for BJ Penn, this time against Yair Rodriguez on Jan. 15 in Phoenix.

Officials announced the featherweight matchup Monday. The fight will headline a UFC Fight Night event at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Penn, 37, announced his retirement in 2014, but has been attempting a comeback since January.

The former lightweight and welterweight champion has been booked to several events, only to fall off due to various reasons. Last month, the UFC canceled an entire event scheduled to take place in the Philippines, after Penn withdrew with a rib injury.

If this bout does indeed go through, Penn (16-10-2) will be seeking his first win since November 2010. He left the sport on a three-fight skid, including a TKO loss to Frankie Edgar,

Rodriguez (9-1) is considered one of the more promising up-and-comers at 145 pounds. The 25-year-old has a 5-0 record in the UFC and is coming off a decision win over Alex Caceres.
