Frankie Edgar has been the UFC lightweight champion. He's been a perennial top contender at featherweight. And now "The Answer" is officially a bantamweight.
Edgar weighed in at 135.5 pounds Friday morning in Las Vegas for his debut in the division.
Edgar was the third fighter to weigh in and looked healthy on the scale. He fights Pedro Munhoz in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday night at the UFC Apex. Munhoz weighed in Friday at 136 pounds even, right at the bantamweight limit.
The story going into this week was Edgar's weight drop. This was the first time in 13 years with the UFC that he really embarked on a weight cut.
The 5-foot-6 Edgar, a future UFC Hall of Famer, typically fought very close to his walking weight at 155 and 145 pounds. There were calls for years for Edgar to move down, because he's typically the smaller man in his fights, but this was the first time he has been as light as 135.5 pounds as a pro MMA fighter.
"I know a lot of people question where I'm at in my career," Edgar said Wednesday at the UFC's virtual media day. "I'm a little older. Coming down a weight class, people were questioning my abilities here. I want to go out there, and more so than prove to anyone else, I want to prove to myself that I'm still a top dog in whatever weight class I fight in."
Edgar (23-8-1) is trying to snap a two-fight losing streak here. The New Jersey native went 8-4 at featherweight and fell in three title fights, one for the interim belt. Edgar, 38, was the UFC lightweight champion in 2011 and 2012.
Munhoz (18-4, 1 NC) is coming off a loss to top bantamweight contender Aljamain Sterling at UFC 238 in June 2019. The Brazil native, who lives and trains in Florida, was on a three-fight winning streak prior to that defeat, which included a knockout of former champion Cody Garbrandt. Munhoz, 33, is ESPN's No. 7-ranked MMA bantamweight coming in.
Both co-main event fighters also successfully made weight Friday. Ovince Saint Preux weighed 205.5 pounds and Alonzo Menifield hit the scale at 204.5 pounds for their light heavyweight bout.
There were some shakeups on the undercard Friday morning.
Calen Born did not weigh-in for his scheduled bout with Dwight Grant due to personal reasons and that bout was canceled.
Takashi Sato did successfully weigh in for a fight against Daniel Rodriguez, but later withdrew because he was not medically cleared to fight. Since both fights were in the same weight class - welterweight - the UFC booked Grant vs. Rodriguez for Saturday night's card.
In addition, Mark Striegl tested positive for COVID-19 and was pulled from a scheduled fight with Timur Valiev. Trevin Jones was signed as a replacement will now fight Valiev at a 140-pound catchweight.
