While PJ Tucker is most known for his outlandish collection of rare sneakers, he made a statement on Friday night in Brooklyn, debuting Nike Basketball's first performance-fashion collaboration in the company's history.
A design partnership between Nike Basketball design director Leo Chang and Los Angeles-based clothing label Fear of God's founding designer Jerry Lorenzo, the Air Fear of God 1 sneaker purposely takes on a new silhouette, bringing a sleek styling to the court. With cues drafting off of the brand's elongated tailoring and low-profile toe shape, the sneaker is expected to release in late November for nearly $400. It was just the latest flex from Tucker as he continues to lead the league in surprises from night to night.
"I don't think [there's] one shoe that I wanted that I don't got yet," Tucker told SLAM afterward.
While PJ Tucker might be known as the reigning sneaker champ, Atlanta Hawks forward and shoe free agent Taurean Prince is turning heads early. Prince broke out Allen Iverson's iconic Reebok Question while on the road in Philadelphia, then was spotted wearing the "Equality" Nike LeBron 15 in Cleveland as a nod to the former Cavs icon. With a carefully mapped-out rotation in store ahead, Prince is expected to continue a series of opposing city tributes throughout the year.
This week also saw yet another Nike premiere, with Kyrie Irving debuting his fifth signature model with the brand.
"Before, I was just trying to get a shoe out. I was just trying to have something that looks hot, looks good," Irving said. "Now, I'm trying to have something that is driven from who I am."
A simple, black-and-white look will serve as the lead colorway for the fall, but Irving debuted the shoe in a tree-camouflage, orange-accented edition designed in collaboration with DJ Travis Bennett, known simply as "Taco." The 24-year-old Odd Future musician's influence on the design is most seen in the oversized, reflective swoosh logo, which then flips upside down as it trails around the heel.
Nike, Jordan and Adidas scaled back their Halloween-specific launches and themes this season, but that didn't stop players from still getting in on the fun Wednesday night. Stephen Curry surprised with a "Purple Cobras" colorway of his Under Armour Curry 5 signature shoe, inspired in part by an old college Halloween costume of his.
In addition to Curry, Deandre Ayton, Allonzo Trier and Josh Okogie were among the players to also join in on the Halloween festivities, with each player wearing different models incorporating themes ranging from skeletal X-rays to "Joker"- and "Goosebumps"-inspired looks from the classic Batman movie series and R.L. Stine-penned children's novels, respectively.
