Aussie javelin thrower Mickle dislocates bad shoulder

Australia's best javelin thrower Kim Mickle has dislocated her shoulder at the Rio Olympics, her first competition back after a reconstruction.

Mickle was seen supporting her right arm and grimacing in pain following a poor final throw in Tuesday night's qualifying rounds.

She immediately left the field with medical staff and has been taken to hospital.

The Australian record-holder did not manage to hurl more than 57.20 metres in her first return to competition since surgery 11 months ago.

Mickle broke down at last year's world titles in Beijing, exacerbating an existing problem by attempting to compete.

After nearly a year of rehab she made a last-minute decision to contest her second Games after throwing beyond 60m at a recent trial in Perth.

"It's just going to be one of those situations where if it happens it happens and if not, then I've given it a red-hot crack," Mickle said on arrival in Rio.

"I'm just proud as punch of where I have got to now.

"I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm the strongest I've ever been. I'm the fittest I have ever been. My throwing is literally coming together right at the right time."

Until her injury Mickle had been on the rise for Australia, winning a breakthrough silver at the 2013 world championships in Moscow and then gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games the following year.

Fellow Australian Kathryn Mitchell snuck into Thursday night's (Friday AEST) final with a top throw of 61.63m.
