As it happened: Lovlina makes quarters, hockey men win; Manu-Saurabh fail to make medal match

Olympic Sports, Summer Olympics

The Indian men's hockey team and boxer Lovlina Borgohain were the biggest positives for India at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday. The hockey team beat Spain 3-0 to bounce back from their 7-1 loss against Australia, while Borgohain progressed to the quarterfinals of the welterweight division.

India's shooters had another disappointing day as none of the four teams made the medal matches in the 10m air pistol mixed team or the 10m air rifle mixed team. In table tennis and badminton, Achanta Sharath Kamal and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, respectively, saw their Tokyo 2020 campaigns come to an end.

Here's a recap of Tuesday's action. And here's Wednesday's preview.

Results

BOXING

Lovlina Borgohain defeated Nadine Apetz of Germany 3-2 by split decision to advance to the women's welterweight (64-69kg) quarterfinals.

HOCKEY

Men's hockey: India beat Spain 3-0 in Pool A.

SHOOTING

10m air pistol mixed team

Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary topped qualification stage 1, but finished seventh in stage 2, missing out on the medal matches.

Abhishek Verma and Yashaswini Deswal, however, didn't make it out of stage 1 as they finished 17th.

10m air rifle mixed team

Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan failed to make the second stage of qualification, finishing 12th in the first stage. Deepak Kumar and Anjum Moudgil also did not progress, finishing 18th.

BADMINTON

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of Great Britain for their second group stage win out of three matches. However, other results in their group and their poor game difference meant they won't advance to the quarterfinals.

TABLE TENNIS

Achanta Sharath Kamal lost in the men's singles third round to China's Ma Long.
