Ibarguen (foot) won't defend triple at Pan Ams

LIMA, Peru -- Caterine Ibarguen is out of the Pan American Games because of a foot injury, her coach said, ending the Colombian's two-time reign in the triple jump at the competition.

The confirmation came after Ibarguen, 35, fell short of a medal Tuesday in the long jump.

"The decision was made two weeks ago," coach Ubaldo Duany said. "Caterine has plantar fasciitis in her right foot and will not compete Friday. She's booked her ticket back to Colombia for tomorrow already so she can rest."

Ibarguen, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump, had won the event at the 2015 Pan Ams in Toronto and at the 2011 games in Guadalajara. She finished second at the 2017 world championships to Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas.
