Stars' Kelsey Plum sprains ankle in practice, out first two games

The San Antonio Stars were without guard Kelsey Plum, the top pick in the 2017 draft, for the team's season-opening game Saturday against the New York Liberty because of a right ankle sprain.

Plum said she is feeling better after stepping on a male practice player's foot and injuring her right ankle.

"I feel good. It's tough, as I was really looking forward to [playing]," she said after the Liberty beat the Stars 73-64. "It was a freak thing that happened in practice. I never missed a game in my college career. It's frustrating, but I know it's not short term. It's long term."

Guard Moriah Jefferson (right knee soreness) also did not play.

"We'll get our pieces back," Plum said. "I'm trying to be patient, but it's not a good virtue of mine. I'm walking around in rehab doing different stuff, swimming twice a day."

Plum and Jefferson also did not play Sunday in the Stars' 89-74 loss to Washington.
