Fordham women's basketball star Bryson Cavanaugh to forgo senior year after transition

Reigning Atlantic 10 player of the year Bryson Cavanaugh will forgo his senior season with Fordham, the school confirmed Monday.

The school did not give a specific reason for Cavanaugh forgoing his final season, but an Outsports.com story this week detailed Cavanaugh's journey to coming out as transgender earlier this month. He is now seeking to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Cavanaugh transferred to Fordham from Cal after his freshman year. He did not play in his lone season at Cal after suffering a concussion.

After sitting out the 2016-17 season at Fordham as a transfer, Cavanaugh started 34 games and averaged 17 points per game in his first college season on the court. The 5-foot-7 guard started all 100 games that Fordham played the past three seasons, with the team compiling a 70-30 record in that span. He averaged 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 38.8 minutes per game last season.

Cavanaugh was eligible to enter the 2020 WNBA draft.
