RR Garcia has signed a two-year extension to stay with the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters. Team manager Paolo Bugia confirmed the news Monday and said both sides were able to agree on terms last week.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The extension is just the latest positive development for Garcia, who can continue showing out for the franchise that helped revive his career over a year ago.
After being relegated to the free agent list by TNT in 2018, the former UAAP MVP out of Far Eastern University was picked up by Phoenix before the start of the 2019 Governors' Cup.
With the Fuel Masters, who was then under head coach Louie Alas, Garcia carved out a role off the bench and averaged 7.6 points on 44 percent shooting, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 10 games.
Garcia continued his strong play off the pine for Phoenix in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup, where he still managed to put up 6.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists while hitting a healthy 39.5 percent of his shots from long range.
The 31-year-old guard is the second Phoenix player to receive an extension in the offseason after Calvin Abueva inked a three-year deal last December.
Bugia said the team is also negotiating a new contract with center Justin Chua, the 2020 season's runner-up for the Most Improved Player (MIP) award.
"Hoping to close Justin this week," Bugia said of the 31-year-old center, who led the league in blocks (1.6) in the recent Philippine Cup.
