San Miguel assistant coach Boycie Zamar has been tapped to mentor the Beermen's 3x3 team for the inaugural PBA 3x3 season.
Team manager Gee Abanilla confirmed reports on Thursday and said Zamar is already working on selecting players for his roster.
"He is finalizing it, but with the current situation, he has to improvise and wait a while," Abanilla said in a text message.
Zamar joined the franchise in the 2013-14 season and has won eight titles as one of coach Leo Austria's top deputies.
The former University of the East mentor and national team coach has quite a job ahead of him, as he will be tasked to form a competitive squad that can go up against other loaded teams.
TNT and Meralco have previously signed Jeremiah Gray and Jason Brickman to their respective teams, while another former Alab Pilipinas player in Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser has been added to Phoenix's side.
The opening of the standalone tournament is also planned on April 18, though that may be pushed back once more due to the continued surge of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Games for the 3x3 tournament will be held on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be three conferences, with each having six legs and one grand finals.
PBA teams -- minus the Alaska Aces -- as well as the Zamboanga Valientes and a team representing Master Sardines currently comprise the 13 teams who have already committed for the season. Three more teams are set to complete the cast of 16.
