Redskins face tough call on final cuts, await word on RG III

The final cuts must be announced by 4 p.m. Saturday. Here are three areas of interest:

  1. Robert Griffin III. There’s still no word on if he’s been cleared by an independent neurologist -- and what that might mean for his future. The Redskins aren’t expected to make any move until he’s cleared and there’s a chance Griffin could stick on the roster for the time being. But, regardless, there’s an inevitability to the situation in Washington. The Redskins have approximately $12.5 million in cap space so they can carry his $6.7 million figure, which remains the same whether he’s on the roster or not. It comes down to whether they view keeping him around as a backup as a tenable situation.

  2. Final cuts. The Redskins made a handful of cuts Friday, including tight end D.J. Williams (with an injury settlement), safety Akeem Davis (with an injury settlement), running back Mack Brown, center Austin Reiter, receivers Reggie Bell and Colin Lockett and linebacker Sage Harold. The team has not announced those cuts, but all were confirmed.

  3. Tough decisions. It’s worth repeating that a handful of players will have a tense day because they’re firmly on the bubble: linebackers Terrance Plummer and Houston Bates, receivers Rashad Ross and Evan Spencer, offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe, corner Deshazor Everett and running back Trey Williams. But the real key is surviving after Sunday when teams start claiming players off the waiver wire. So even if they make it through Saturday, the celebratory feelings might not last long. It’s the way of life in the NFL.
