Army United's Singaporean goalkeeper Hassan Sunny insists he didn't have to think twice about staying with the club after being rewarded for an outstanding debut season in the Thai Premier League (TPL) with a two-year extension to his contract.
Hassan, who is currently preparing for this week's World Cup qualifier against Japan, has impressed since keeping a clean sheet in the season opener at home to Navy FC. Army's contract offer is an indication of the esteem in which he is now held at the club and in the country as a whole.
"I am very happy to be with Army United," Hassan told ESPN FC.
"The club and the fans have been treating me well. I am very glad that they came out with a new contract for me. I did not have to think twice when I signed it."
There were rumours that other TPL clubs were considering bids for the Singapore international but the former Warriors FC keeper is quite happy where is.
"I received a call saying that there were a few clubs interested in me but I told them I would stay with Army United," said Hassan.
Former Army head coach Gary Stevens had a hard time convincing his superiors that using one of the club's precious foreign quota places on a goalkeeper would be a good bit of business. But Hassan has done more than justify his place in the team and few would disagree that he has been the TPL's outstanding goalkeeper in 2015.
Two of Army's best results of the season -- a 0-0 draw at Buriram United and a 1-0 win at Suphanburi -- owed much to Hassan's commanding presence and superb agility. Army United are likely to finish mid-table this season but have an FA Cup semifinal against Muang Thong United next month.
Asked what he hoped to achieve with the club, Hassan said, "I really hope that Army United will at least get a trophy in the near future. I will try my best in whatever I can to help the club to achieve that dream."
Army fans will be delighted with the news that their goalkeeper has pledged his future to the club. He has become a firm favourite not just for his performances but also his humility.
