Arsenal's Calum Chambers happy to be learning despite lack of game time

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers says he is learning everything he can from Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, despite not getting much of a chance to play in the first-team.

Chambers, 21, moved from Southampton to the Emirates in July 2014 for £16 million and by this time last season he had made 20 appearances and picked up three caps for England.

However, as Arsenal's injury issues lifted, the defender has found himself down the pecking order for club and country this campaign and was denied a loan move in the summer by manager Arsene Wenger.

"I feel I have learned so much over the last two years and I am happy," Chambers told The Daily Mail. "I don't think it happened too quickly. It just happened very quickly. It was a whirlwind start but I took it game by game and I enjoyed it.

"At the moment, I have changed position to centre-back. I'm not getting so much game time but I am still working in training and trying to fight for my place.

"I'm not down or anything. When you are not in the team, you have to prepare for games as if you are in. You have to do everything the same.

"In training, Per always gives me advice. Laurent is the same. I feel I can go up to them and ask them anything and learn from them. I watch them in games all the time, learning and it is helping me get better and better.'

Chambers played well for England's under-21s in the 0-0 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday, but admits he wants to be back among the senior side.

"This (U21s) is good for me at the minute," he added. "Of course I miss the seniors. Playing for the seniors is the ultimate goal. But coming here, getting game time -- the talent in the squad is still very good. The games we play are all challenges."
