Columbus Crew SC transferred defender Gaston Sauro to Toluca FC of Liga MX, the club announced Wednesday.
Sauro, a 29-year-old from Argentina, has started 37 of his 39 games with the Crew in five seasons, scoring two goals, both of which came this season. He missed all of the 2017 season because of a knee injury that cut short his 2016 campaign.
"Gaston was an inspiration to his teammates with his perseverance in overcoming an injury to play soccer again," Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "We want to wish him all the best in this next stage of his career."
Sauro joined Columbus late in the 2015 season after being acquired from FC Basel in Switzerland.
