PGA DFS Marketplace: Soft field doesn't always mean studs are best

Although Jordan Spieth will be a hot commodity for the AT&T Byron Nelson, is he the best choice? Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

The Players Championship played out in strange fashion during the weekend. The event resembled the John Deere Classic in the opening two rounds with golfers of every skill level posting ridiculously low scores. However, after seeing Jason Day race out to a score of 15-under after two rounds, the course managers made the decision to aggressively attack the greens and consequently chopped the grass down to the point where they appeared to be brown Saturday and played extremely fast. The scores in the third round rapidly backtracked leaving golfers looking lost for much of the day. By Sunday, the course finally looked to be playing about how most would have predicted all along with a nice balance from start to finish.

Unfortunately, for golf fans in search of drama Sunday, there was little to be found. After Day took the lead on the first day, he was never really threatened for most of the weekend and, although he did not play his best game Sunday, his putter was always there to help bail him out of trouble during a couple of key stretches along the back nine holes en route to his first win at TPC Sawgrass. With his win, it marked the seventh time Day has won in his past 17 starts, the type of numbers not seen often since the fall of Tiger Woods in recent years. I anticipate that as his run continues, his ownership numbers for all contests will become historically high.
