Rookie Pieters gets top marks on day 2 of Ryder Cup

CHASKA, Minn. -- Friday started as a disaster, but ended on a high note for Team Europe. Saturday started strong but ended with a whimper. How did each individual do for the Europeans? Here are their Saturday grades:

(Team USA's Day 2 grades)

Rafael Cabrera-Bello

Grade: A
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-0-1; Four-Ball 1-0-0; Overall: 1-0-1

The momentum from the Friday pairing with Sergio Garcia continued and I'd argue was even a bit more ramped up. Cabrera-Bello never got too rattled even when he was 4 down.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Grade: C
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-1-0; Four-Ball 0-0-0; Overall: 0-1-0

Flashes of a great golfer came through a few times but not nearly enough to make his Ryder Cup debut memorable or victorious.

Sergio Garcia

Grade: B
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-1-1; Four-Ball 1-1-0; Overall: 1-2-1

Even in losing efforts, Garcia -- while being heckled mercilessly by the crowd -- played some phenomenal golf. Yes he missed some short putts, but he also drained some bombs.

Martin Kaymer

Grade: C-
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-1-0; Four-Ball 0-2-0; Overall: 0-3-0
Note: Captain's pick

Making only two birdies for your teammate isn't going to promote confidence. The good news? It seemed as if no amount of birdies Kaymer could have made would have saved them against Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar.

Rory McIlroy

Grade: A
2016 Record: Foursomes 1-1-0; Four-Ball 2-0-0; Overall: 3-1-0

I saw Michael Jordan on the first tee Saturday afternoon and after watching McIlroy's performance on Saturday, I think he was channeling just a small amount of No. 23.

Thomas Pieters

Grade: A+
2016 Record: Foursomes 1-1-0; Four-Ball 2-0-0; Overall: 3-1-0
Note: Captain's pick

By now you should not only have a healthy respect for Pieters, but you might want to allow just a little bit of fear to seep in when he's paired with McIlroy.

Justin Rose

Grade: C
2016 Record: Foursomes 1-1-0; Four-Ball 1-1-0; Overall: 2-2-0

Sometimes Rose carries the team and sometimes the team carries Rose. In the morning, he made a great teammate for Chris Wood. In the afternoon, it was Henrik Stenson who had to carry him.

Henrik Stenson

Grade: C
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-2-0; Four-Ball 1-1-0; Overall: 1-3-0

His playing partner Matthew Fitzpatrick was abysmal. Then, when he gets back together with Justin Rose, Stenson played great, even in the loss.

Andy Sullivan

Grade: Incomplete
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-1-0; Four-Ball 0-0-0; Overall: 0-1-0

He looked amazing driving the golf cart around all day.

Lee Westwood

Grade: F
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-1-0; Four-Ball 0-1-0; Overall: 0-2-0
Note: Captain's pick

Missing three putts inside 3 feet not only ruins the four birdies he made, but it also destroys the spirit of the guy playing with Westwood. Right now, if Westwood is the one who has to make a 4-foot putt to save your life, you're going to die.

Danny Willett

Grade: C
2016 Record: Foursomes 0-0-0; Four-Ball 0-2-0; Overall: 0-2-0

Four birdies and an extremely hostile crowd was admirable. Problem is, the birdies didn't win any holes and shaky putting meant an unnecessary lost point for the team.

Chris Wood

Grade: B
2016 Record: Foursomes 1-0-0; Four-Ball 0-0-0; Overall: 1-0-0

Solid is how I'd describe the debut of Wood, who was a nice partner for Justin Rose. Both weren't perfect, but Wood showed enough moxie in the morning to earn a point.
