Marcus Fraser and Nacho Elvira set the early pace and share the lead on day one of the Maybank Championship in Malaysia.

Fraser and Elvira are level at the top at 7 under with men each carding eight birdies and a single bogey on the opening day.

"It's been a good day," Fraser said. "I played steady all day and putted really well.

"I've been playing well having a hit at home but I haven't played a whole lot of competitive golf. It was nice to go out and play well in a great tournament."

Spaniard Elvira made a fantastic start, hitting three consecutive birdies at the 11th, 12th and 13th before surrendering his only bogey of the day at the 14th.

"To be honest seven under is always good," Elvira said. "With my record here not being too great, 65 is very good. My caddie told me today that I hit 12 fairways.

"I have been hitting my irons well and putting great, I just needed to put the ball in play. I'm happy with the way things are going, happy to be turning around my golf game a little bit."

Angelo Que started the day off well with nine birdies and no bogeys in his opening 11 holes but he failed to maintain his momentum with consecutive double bogeys to finish the day in third place alongside Jazz Janewattananond.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters remains two strokes behind the leaders with four-time major champion Ernie Els a further shot back in an eight-man group including Gaganjeet Bhullar.
