Tiger's record and more Valhalla PGA Championship moments

Valhalla Golf Club, the PGA Championship is coming.

The storied course in Louisville, Kentucky, will be hosting the second of golf's four major tournaments this week for the fourth time in its history. Storylines abound at this year's PGA Championship. Scottie Scheffler remains the man to beat coming off his win at the Masters. Brooks Koepka has a chance to win back-to-back PGA Championships for the second time in his career. Rory McIlroy looks to win his elusive fifth major after a lengthy drought.

Speaking of McIlroy, his last major win was the last time Valhalla hosted the PGA Championship, all the way back in 2014. The club has hosted the tournament three times in total, and if those were any indication, we're in for some excellent golf this week. Here's a look back at the history of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

1996: Mark Brooks

Valhalla's first PGA Championship saw one of the most dramatic finishes in the tournament's history. After charging up the leaderboard in the final round, Brooks hit a birdie on No. 18 to force a playoff with Kenny Perry. Perry then hit the rough in his second and third shots of the first playoff hole, and Brooks completed the comeback for his only career major win.

2000: Tiger Woods

Another banger of a tournament and one of Woods' greatest performances. For the first time in his career, Woods paired with Jack Nicklaus over the first two rounds, and he wasted no time impressing the man whose all-time major mark he would end up chasing. Woods set a PGA Championship record with an 18-under par -- but it wasn't enough to win outright, as Bob May matched him shot for shot. Their Sunday duel was incredible, with both players notching four birdies on the back nine and trading fist pumps after tying one another at the end of the final round.

The three-hole playoff was tense, with both players struggling on the final hole, but Woods ended up doing what he does best and held strong, securing victory when May's potential tying putt just missed. It was Woods' fifth major win and part of his "Tiger Slam," where he won all four major tournaments consecutively over two years.

2014: Rory McIlroy

Valhalla seemingly cannot help but host incredible PGA Championships, and this one -- Rory McIlroy's final major win to date -- was no exception. McIlroy started strong, finishing 1 stroke behind Kevin Chappell, Ryan Palmer and Lee Westwood on day one. He gained the lead at 9-under on Day 2, and kept it despite a hotly contested Saturday round in which six players shared the lead at one point.

McIlroy struggled at the outset of the final day, bogeying two holes on the front nine and falling behind Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson. The back nine was more fortunate for McIlroy, however, as he nailed an eagle on No. 10 and birdies on No. 13 and No. 17 to get back in it. He only needed par on No. 18 to secure the win.
