Bruised knee sidelines Mariners' Mitch Haniger; Mike Zunino placed on DL

MLB, Seattle Mariners

Seattle Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger was scratched from Thursday's 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels with a bruised right knee.

The Mariners also placed starting catcher Mike Zunino on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised left ankle.

It wasn't clear when Haniger suffered the bruise or whether he would miss more time. Haniger, who is second in the American League with 62 RBIs and also has 17 home runs, ran into the wall chasing a foul ball Wednesday but stayed in the game.

Ben Gamel took Haniger's place in right field Thursday and went 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Guillermo Heredia started in center, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Manager Scott Servais said Zunino rolled his ankle running the bases late in Seattle's 7-4 loss Wednesday to the Angels.

Zunino was immediately sent in for X-rays on Thursday and had his foot immobilized in a boot in the clubhouse before the series finale.

"It's not good news,'' Servais said.

Chris Herrmann took over as the Mariners' starting catcher and hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Herrmann, who was signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal in early April after being designated for assignment by Arizona at the end of spring training, didn't find out he was in the starting lineup until five hours before first pitch.

"I know a lot of pitchers here have a lot of confidence behind Mike behind the plate, and I hope I can gain that confidence from these guys as well," Herrman said. "I am trying to do my part and fill in while he is gone."

Zunino is batting .189 with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs this season. He is just 2-for-13 during the Mariners' current homestand, but came on as a pinch hitter Wednesday and got a hit and walked.

Zunino spent three weeks on the DL earlier in the season with a strained left oblique.

With Zunino on the DL, the Mariners also recalled David Freitas from Triple-A Tacoma to serve as the backup catcher.
