Max Holloway to defend title against Brian Ortega at UFC 231

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will attempt to defend his title against Brian Ortega at UFC 231 on Dec. 8, in his first appearance since a health scare pulled him from a championship fight in July.

The UFC announced the 145-pound title fight Monday. MMAJunkie.com reported the targeted date.

Holloway (19-3) was scheduled to fight Ortega at UFC 226 in July, but was pulled the week of the fight due to "concussion-like symptoms." The 26-year-old told ESPN later that month doctors were unable to diagnosis the exact issue, but said he was feeling much better.

Fighting out of Waianae, Hawaii, Holloway is seeking the second defense of his 145-pound title. He is expected to eventually move up in weight to 155 pounds.

Ortega (14-0) ultimately didn't fight at UFC 226 following Holloway's withdrawal. He earned the title shot by knocking out former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in the first round at UFC 222 in March.

A Los Angeles native, Ortega has finished his past six opponents.
