The UFC is close to finalizing a featherweight title fight between Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar for UFC 240 on July 27 in Edmonton, Canada, according to multiple sources.
The promotion has tried to book this matchup twice in the past, although both attempts fell through due to injury. Once official, the 145-pound championship will take place on the pay-per-view portion of UFC 240, which will take in Edmonton's Rogers Place.
Holloway (20-4) is coming off a five-round decision loss to Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight championship, at UFC 236 on April 13. It was Holloway's first loss since 2013, snapping a 13-fight win streak. Holloway was attempting to move up in weight to capture his second UFC title.
Fighting out of Waianae, Hawaii, Holloway was supposed to face Edgar in 2017 and 2018. Edgar suffered an injury in 2017; Holloway was forced to pull out in 2018 due to injury.
Edgar (23-6-1) is a former lightweight champion. He has fought for the featherweight title twice in his career, coming up short both times to former champion Jose Aldo.
A native of Tom's River, New Jersey, Edgar missed the second half of 2018 with a bicep injury. He surrendered his right to fight Holloway for the title in early 2018, in a knockout loss to Brian Ortega at UFC 222. Edgar, 37, bounced back with a win against Cub Swanson in April 2018, prior to suffering the bicep injury.
