RENTON, Wash. -- Wednesday appeared to offer one final chance for Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor to show up at the Seahawks practice facility. But when the team got ready to take the field, Chancellor was nowhere to be found.
"He's not here, and he's not playing," head coach Pete Carroll said. "That's all I can tell you at this point."
Asked if he was disappointed, Carroll said: "I am disappointed in this, very much so. And I think everybody should be because he's been such a great part of our team. It's unfortunate that it's come to this, and he's not here."
Chancellor is a well-liked and respected player in the Seahawks' locker room. For now, teammates are forced to balance the line between supporting him and realizing it's likely they're going to have to take the field without him.
"Everybody's disappointed," cornerback Richard Sherman said. "You expect to have him. But like I said, we've got to go with the guys we have. Obviously, Dion [Bailey] is going to start this week, and that's what you've got to focus on. You've got to treat it like he's not going to be here because he isn't."
Sherman added that he's not surprised Chancellor is taking his holdout into the season.
"No. Because he plays a certain way," Sherman said. "He's a man. He's about his morals. He believes in what he believes, and he stands for his beliefs, so that's what he's doing.
"I think everybody understands his stance and have understood it the entire time, so I think we'll be fine."
The Seahawks have practices on Thursday and Friday before heading to St. Louis to take on the Rams, but Carroll didn't seem to hold out any hope that Chancellor was close to showing up.
"He's not here right now, and so he's not playing," Carroll said. "That's it. Today's Wednesday."
Should Chancellor continue his holdout through the weekend, he'd lose his game check of $267,647, bringing his potential fines in excess of $1 million should the team choose to enforce them.
