LeSean McCoy becomes 30th player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career rushing yards

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy surpassed 10,000 career rushing yards in Sunday's 24-6 win over the Miami Dolphins, becoming the 30th player in NFL history to reach the milestone.

McCoy passed former Dolphins running back Ricky Williams for 29th on the all-time list.

"It was cool. It was fun," McCoy said. "Just the guys -- not only this week but the whole year -- the linemen constantly tell me about it. 'Let's get 10K. 10K chase.' There were times where I kind of forgot about it, and they remind me. You know, they wanted it as bad as I did, maybe even more."

McCoy, 29, entered Sunday with 9,961 yards in his nine-year career. His 14-yard rush in the second quarter moved him past 10,000 yards, but he was injured on the play.

McCoy remained on the ground for several moments after being tackled by Kiko Alonso, and then he walked to the sideline with trainers. McCoy returned to the game after one play and caught a touchdown pass later in the drive. It was his second touchdown of the game, after he rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter.

"I just lost my air," he said. "I got tackled on the ball. The few people who ever did it before, they know. You, like, can't breathe, so I was grasping for air. That was it. It wasn't major."

McCoy is the first rusher since Frank Gore in 2014 to pass the 10,000-yard milestone. He joins Gore (13,858 yards) and Adrian Peterson (12,276) as the only active players with at least 10,000 career rushing yards.

Since the summer, McCoy has used the hashtag "#10kchase" on many of his social media posts to recognize his pursuit of the milestone. He also made T-shirts with the hashtag. However, he told ESPN in June that 12,000 career yards will be a better milestone to headline a potential Hall of Fame résumé.

"There's not a lot of people that haven't [been inducted] with 12,000 yards," he said. "That's something I'm shooting for."

Of the 16 players with at least 12,000 career rushing yards, 13 are in the Hall of Fame. Two, Gore and Peterson, are still active. The other is Edgerrin James, who has been a semifinalist for induction the past four years.

Entering Sunday's game, McCoy had 3,169 rushing yards since he was traded to the Bills from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He joins Thurman Thomas (12,074 yards) and O.J. Simpson (11,236) among Bills rushers with at least 10,000 career yards.

Emmitt Smith is the NFL's all-time rushing leader, with 18,355 career yards.

Thomas, who ranks 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list, wore one of McCoy's "We Chasing 10K" hoodies in the locker room after Sunday's game.

"Obviously, I'm proud of it right now," Thomas told ESPN. "I got my 10K on right now. After this is over, hopefully next year we can come back and go for 12K. He's been a good friend of mine ever since he got here, and I'm very proud of him."
