The Detroit Red Wings signed veteran forward Zach Aston-Reese to a one-year, two-way contract on Sunday.
The Red Wings then placed Aston-Reese on waivers in order to send him to AHL affiliate Grand Rapids.
Aston-Reese had spent part of training camp on a professional tryout deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, who released him Friday.
The 29-year-old Aston-Reese spent last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and tallied a career-high 10 goals and four assists over 77 games.
In a six-year NHL career spanning stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2017-22), Anaheim Ducks (2022) and Maple Leafs, Aston-Reese has 80 points (42 goals, 38 assists) and 124 penalty minutes in 307 games.
