Coronavirus: France vs Ireland postponed; Wales vs. Scotland to go ahead

Rugby, Six Nations

France's final Six Nations rugby international game against Ireland has been postponed but Wales' championship finale against Scotland will go ahead as planned, organisers have announced.

The organisers also confirmed on Tuesday that the women's and U20's matches have been postponed.

A decision is yet to be made on a new date for the rescheduled games, including England's trip to Italy which was called off on Thursday.

Wales will face Scotland on the Principality Stadium on Saturday as organisers have confirmed that the game will go ahead.

Six Nations said: "Following instructions received from the authorities in France, the decision has been made to postpone the Round 5 Guinness Six Nations match between France and Ireland.

"The fixture between Wales Women and Scotland Women is also postponed after a Scottish player tested positive for Covid-19 and a further seven members of the Scotland camp (players and management) are self-isolating.

"Six Nations and its constituent Unions and federations will work closely to identify dates on which all postponed matches will take place. No immediate announcement will be made on rescheduling as we will need to discuss with all relevant stakeholders and assess the evolution of the situation.

An announcement is yet to be made regarding the future of the French and Irish women's and U20's fixtures scheduled to take place this weekend.

"We're disappointed that it is not going ahead, but at the same time we fully understand," Ireland coach Andy Farrell said in a news conference on Monday. "It isn't ideal. As a player and a coach, after a loss you want to get back on the horse as we've been saying for the last couple of weeks.

"We were on the training field going through our preparation for tomorrow and we came off the indoor training field and we got the news. So we have to make new plans and we're still in the process in doing that."

On Sunday, France banned gathering of more than 1,000 people as the death toll and number of coronavirus infections continued to rise.

England lead the Six Nation on point difference, level on points with second place France.
