LONDON -- Novak Djokovic played the first match of this year's Wimbledon tournament under a closed roof on Centre Court, and he won it in straight sets.
The three-time champion at the All England Club beat Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a fourth-round match that was postponed from Monday.
During the third set, with Djokovic already up a break, the second-seeded Serb asked for a medical timeout and a trainer examined and stretched his right shoulder. Djokovic appeared to grimace in pain a couple of times as his shoulder was being checked.
"It's been something that I've been dragging back and forth for a while now," Djokovic said. "But I'm still managing to play, which is the most important thing."
Djokovic will face 2010 Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, a man he has beaten 25 times in 27 matches, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
It will be Djokovic's 39th quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam event -- the third-most by a man in the Open Era.
"He beat me here in semis in 2010. It was I think his first Grand Slam final," Djokovic said of Berdych. "Obviously he's been around many years. He's an established top-10 player, big game, flat shots, which are pretty good for this surface obviously where the ball bounces quite low.
"He's someone that understands the occasion of playing big matches, big tournaments. He will not get overwhelmed by the stadium or whatever. He's been there so many years. He's got experience."
The men traditionally have Tuesday off at Wimbledon, but Rafael Nadal's five-set loss to Gilles Muller on Monday forced Djokovic's match to be pushed back a day, which he was not happy about.
Wimbledon officials said the decision to delay the match until Tuesday -- it was the only Round of 16 match not to be played Monday -- was made for safety reasons.
"There was security reasons," Djokovic said Tuesday. "... I obviously was not happy not to play last night. I wanted to play. I thought we could have played. We were kept for two and a half hours in the dark, in a way, without knowing what we are going to do. So you were on your toes warming up, cooling down. Referee's office was completely indecisive.
"Anyway, it was frustrating last night, I must admit. But I quickly just turned the next page and just focused on what I need to do today."
Djokovic was broken only once in his match, in the second set. But the 12-time major champion, who won the Wimbledon title in 2011, '14 and '15, broke Mannarino early in the third and advanced to the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the ninth time.
Mannarino has never before reached the quarterfinals at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He also lost in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2013. Last year, he lost to Djokovic in the second round at Wimbledon, also in straight sets.
Djokovic won his 58th career match at Wimbledon -- just one shy of John McEnroe for fifth in the Open Era -- and improved to 20-1 against players ranked outside of the top 50 at the All England Club. His lone loss came in the 2008 second round to Marat Safin, then ranked No. 75 in the world.
The rain started at about 11:30 a.m. The opening match on Centre Court was due to start at noon, so the roof was closed for the first time this year. The rain came and went into the afternoon.
