Johanna Konta is out of the Australian Open after losing 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-5 to former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza in the second round, with the match finishing at 03:12 a.m. local time on Friday morning in Melbourne.
Konta was the last remaining British singles competitor in the tournament, but was defeated by the Spaniard in a tense match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes.
The players began their contest after midnight, following Alexander Zverev's five-set victory against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, which lasted nearly four hours and ran late into the evening on Thursday.
Konta, who won her first round match against Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic after a lengthy third set tiebreak, had to go the distance again in her second round clash with Muguruza in Margaret Court Arena.
Muguruza, the No. 18 seed in the women's draw, broke Konta's serve in the opening game of the match, and controlled the remainder of the first set. At 3-2 down, Konta did have one opportunity to level the match, but Muguruza was able to save break point and go on to claim the opening set 6-4 in 43 minutes.
The British No. 1 was again unable to convert a break point at 2-2 in the second set, but later secured the set 7-6 (3) with a tiebreak victory, forcing a decider.
The third and final set was closely contested, with neither player earning a break point until the 12th game, when Muguruza set up match point at 6-5. The 2017 Wimbledon champion finished the match as she started it by breaking Konta, and in doing so took the set 7-5 and progressed to the third round of the competition.
Muguruza will face Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky in the next round.
