Stanford honors Tara VanDerveer by naming court after former coach

Stanford honored former longtime women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer on Sunday by naming the playing floor at Maples Pavilion after her.

The Cardinal then beat Gonzaga 89-58 on Tara VanDerveer Court to move to 3-0 on the season.

Stanford is now coached by Kate Paye, who played for VanDerveer and was an assistant under her for 17 seasons before taking over. Three more former VanDerveer players -- Katy Steding, Erica McCall and Jeanette Pohlen -- are among Paye's assistants.

Thus, there is still a strong sense of VanDerveer's style with Stanford, which she led to three national championships.

"It looks awesome out there," Paye said of the court with VanDerveer's name on it. "I think our team, our staff knew that the best way we could honor Tara on a day like today was to play really well.

"I'm so happy for Tara, what an incredible honor and deserved honor. She's iconic. She's a legend. It was really cool, right before the game started, to hear the announcer say, 'For the first time ever, welcome to Tara VanDerveer Court at Maples Pavilion.' It definitely gave me chills."

Stanford started this season unranked after losing key players from last season, including Cameron Brink, the No. 2 pick in the WNBA draft, and Kiki Iriafen, who transferred to USC.

That may not be the case for long.

"We're a new roster and we're starting to build and find our identity," Paye said.

VanDerveer, 71, retired after last season, when Stanford went 30-6 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. She was in attendance Sunday along with several family members, including her 97-year-old mother, Rita.

VanDerveer finished her career as the all-time wins leader among Division I basketball coaches (women or men). She went 1,216-271 in 38 seasons at Stanford, five at Ohio State and two at Idaho.

UConn's Geno Auriemma is at 1,215 victories, all with the Huskies, after Sunday's 86-49 win over South Florida. He could tie VanDerveer when No. 2 UConn plays No. 15 North Carolina on Friday (ESPN2, 6 p.m. ET).
