Adam Jones won the Dew Tour's new FMX Triple Threat event at the San Francisco Toyota City Championships on Thursday, beating out Taka Higashino and Wes Agee for the top spot.
Jones won the Upright [no backflips] and Whip portions of the event, then held his own behind Kyle Loza and Higashino in the Open [anything goes] Best Trick finale. Loza's body flip was the highest scoring trick in the Open competition, earning a 94.30, with Higashino's rock solid double-grab backflip close behind at 94.10, but neither was enough to close the gap on Jones, whose double-hand seat grab backflip scored 93.10 and pushed his overall average to 91.10.
"It was a struggle and I didn't know how I was gonna place, but after I did all three of my tricks and did them all as good as I wanted to do them, I was so psyched," Jones said after the competition.
Jones was a Dew Tour dominator back when FMX was featured more prominently on the tour, winning the Dew Cup championship title in 2008, and was thrilled to see FMX competition back in the mix this year. "This contest was the most fun contest I've done in a long time," he said.
Other highlights from the Open competition included Blake "Bilko" Williams' 360 Nac-Nac [91.70] and Javier Villegas' Cordova flip to Superman [89.20]. All three portions of the event took place on a ramp-to-dirt setup in front of San Francisco's iconic City Hall. "It doesn't get much more city than this," FMX legend Carey Hart, who created the Triple Threat format, said while announcing the event for NBC Sports Network.
Thursday's event marked a return to FMX for the action sports series, which has scaled back to just three events in 2012. The Pantech Beach Championships took place in August in Ocean City, Md., and the Ion Mountain Championships are scheduled for Dec. 13-16 in Breckenridge, Colo., the only Winter Dew Tour event on the calendar this season.
