Former league MVP Kelly Williams is back with the TNT Tropang Giga after signing a two-year deal with the franchise, the team announced on Thursday.
Williams had previously announced his retirement last Sept. 7, which came as a shock to team management. He has career averages of 10.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
"We would like to welcome Kelly back to TNT Tropang GIGA. His leadership and experience will help us achieve success in the upcoming conference," said team manager Gabby Cui in a statement.
PBA Chairman and team governor Ricky Vargas also welcomed the decision of Williams to return for two more years with TNT.
"Welcome home Kelly, great to have you back. Cheers," mentioned Vargas.
Williams won Rookie of the year in 2007 and was league MVP in 2008, the same year he led the Sta. Lucia Realtors to their last PBA title.
After dealing with health issues, Williams was traded to the Tropang Texters, where he won five more titles.
He is also a five-time All-Star, a three-time Mythical First Team selection and four-time Mythical Second Team selection.
Returning head coach Chot Reyes posted on Instagram on Thursday morning showing team practice at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Quezon City. Captioned "Handles," it briefly showed Williams participating in a dribbling drill.
Reyes said he inquired about Williams' status when he was asked to return as head coach.
"When I was asked to come back, the first question I asked was 'How about Mark (Dickel)?' The second question I asked was 'What's the status of Kelly?' When management told me they're open, I messaged him right away. We got together, had a serious heart-to-heart convo, and I'm very happy he's back."
