Mike Zimmer receives high praise from Vikings ownership

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Nine days ago, the Minnesota Vikings entered an offseason filled with questions ranging from who will take over as offensive coordinator to finding their quarterback of the future. One area that isn’t ringing any alarms for ownership is the stability under head coach Mike Zimmer.

“Coach Zimmer does an outstanding job and as good a coach as he was when we hired him, he’s gotten that much better over the four years,” Vikings owner Mark Wilf said. “I know he spent a lot of last offseason working on things, just getting himself better as well as the team, whether it’s situational football or different scenarios for our players. So, I think he’s grown in the process and we, quite frankly, as owners have grown in this process to realize that we need to get the best people here, people like Coach Zimmer and Rick Spielman, and to have the confidence in them that they’re going to get us to where we need to be.”

Prior to the 2016 season, the Vikings made it clear they were invested long-term in Zimmer.

Ahead of training camp that year, the Vikings extended Zimmer’s contract. The details were not publicly disclosed, but Zimmer’s deal was reportedly a two-year extension worth $5 million annually, excluding incentives.

There was no rush to do it, either. He took on his first head-coaching gig at the age of 58 in 2014 and had initially signed a contract that ran through the 2017 season. The extension was a sign that the Vikings believed in Zimmer’s leadership and long-standing goals for the franchise.

At the end of his fourth year in Minnesota, Zimmer has a 39-25 record and wrapped up the 2017 season with the No. 1 defense in the NFL. In a year of numerous team and individual milestones, Zimmer boasts one of his own after winning his first playoff game as a head coach.

Minnesota’s most pressing need this offseason is to engage in contract negotiations with its quarterback for 2018. In more than a month, Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford all become free agents. Zimmer receiving another extension may be on the backburner for now, but ownership's vote of confidence certainly shows the team wants to put its future in his hands for years to come.
